Best Riddles for Middle Schoolers

The middle school years are truly a unique time in a child’s mental development. They’re still 100% kid, to be sure. But as a middle schooler, they are beginning to wrap their minds around complex ideas. As their powers of deductive reasoning grow, they can solve more difficult problems and riddles. Here's a list of our favorite riddles for middle schoolers.

When I taught middle school aged kids, I loved to challenge them with hink pinks. A hink pink is a riddle, the answer to which is a pair of rhyming words, each with the same number of syllables. For example, what do you call a round feline (answer: fat cat). Our home page features a daily hink pink widget, as well as some free, downloadable worksheets. Check it out!

Best Complicated Riddles for Adults

Many of the same riddles that are great for kids and middle schoolers can be equally challenging for adults. In this section, though, I would like to present you with a set of riddles borrowed shamelessly from Mr. Tolkien, as told in his classic fantasy novel, “The Hobbit.”

They come from a scene in which the hero, Bilbo, encounters the gnarled creature, Gollum, deep in the bowels of the Misty Mountains. They challenge one another to a battle of wits, famously dubbed, “Riddles in the Dark.” The great thing about Mr. Tolkien’s riddles is that they are written very poetically and rhyme (as all great riddles should).

Gollum:
What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up, up it goes,
And yet, never grows?

Answer: Mountain

Bilbo:
Thirty white horses on a red hill,
First they champ,
Then they stamp,
Then they stand still.

Answer: Teeth

Gollum:
Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.

Answer: Wind

Bilbo:
An eye in a blue face
Saw an eye in a green face.
'That eye is like to this eye'
Said the first eye,
'But in low place
Not in high place.'
Answer: Sun shining on daisies

Gollum:
It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.
Answer: Darkness

Bilbo:
A box without hinges, key or lid,
Yet golden treasure inside is hid.

Answer: Egg

Gollum:
Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking

Answer: Fish

Bilbo:
No-legs lay on one-leg, two legs sat near on three legs, four legs got some.

Answer: Fish on a little one-legged table, man at table sitting on a three-legged stool, the cat gets the bones

Gollum:
This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

Answer: Time
